Privacy policy
Last updated 25 October 2026
Reel is made by dripster82. This policy explains what the app does with information, in plain terms. The short version: Reel has no accounts, no analytics and no advertising, and it does not send your files, file names or viewing history to the developer or to anyone else.
What Reel stores on your device
- Your sources. The address, share name and user name of each NAS share or folder you add. Passwords are stored in the iOS Keychain, not in the app's database.
- Your library. The list of video files found on your sources, and the titles, artwork and episode details matched to them.
- Your activity. Where you are in each title, what you have watched, your favourites, collections, chosen audio and subtitle tracks, and any fixes you make to matches.
- Caches. Artwork, scrub preview frames and metadata responses, kept to make the app fast. You can set a limit and clear them in Settings.
- Downloads. Copies of titles you choose to download for offline viewing.
- A diagnostics log of what the app did (connections, playback events, sync results). It stays on the device unless you choose to share it from Settings → About → Diagnostics. Passwords are never written to it.
What leaves your device
Reel talks to these services only to do what you asked. None of them receive your files.
- Your own servers. The NAS shares and WebDAV servers you add. Reel connects to them directly over your network to list and play files.
- The Movie Database (TMDB). To match a file to a film or episode, Reel sends the title and year parsed from the file name (never the file itself, its path or your server details) and receives titles, artwork and details. TMDB's privacy policy applies to those requests. Artwork is downloaded from TMDB's image servers.
- fanart.tv, TheTVDB, AniDB and Anime-Lists (optional, or used only for anime). Reel sends a title or an id to fetch extra artwork or a mapping. Only used when you have added a key for that service, or, for AniDB and Anime-Lists, when anime matching is on.
- OpenSubtitles (optional). If you add an OpenSubtitles key and search for subtitles, the title or id of the film or episode is sent, and your OpenSubtitles account details are used to download. Their privacy policy applies.
- iCloud. If you turn on sync, your viewing progress, favourites, collections, match fixes and source definitions (without passwords) are stored in your own private iCloud database, which only your devices can read. Apple's privacy policy applies. Passwords travel between your devices through iCloud Keychain, which is end to end encrypted.
Reel does not use analytics, crash reporting services, advertising identifiers or tracking of any kind, and it does not collect personal data for the developer.
Local network
Reel asks for local network access so it can find and connect to shares on your network. It does not scan or report devices on your network to anyone.
Children
Reel is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone.
Your choices
- Delete a source, your downloads or your caches in Settings at any time.
- Turn iCloud sync off in Settings. Deleting the app removes its local data; data already in your private iCloud database can be removed from iCloud settings on the device.
- Remove any metadata or subtitle key you added, and the app stops contacting that service.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
